El Calafate is 3,000 km from Buenos Aires, and 315 km. from Rio Gallegos, capital city of Santa Cruz Province.
We have paved routes, almost totally, that leads to southern Chile, Puerto Natales, and from there to Torres del Paine National Park.
By plane:
El Calafate International Airport is located 22 Km. from city centre.
Regular flights from Buenos Aires to El Calafate International Airport (3 hours).
Aerolineas Argentinas offer a minimum of 3 daily frequencies, also Lan and Lade offer regular services.
Airport-Hostel: 30 min. by taxi/shuttle
Another option from Buenos Aires is the International Airport in Rio Gallegos (320 kilometers far from El Calafate). From Rio Gallegos, bus lines offer at least 4 daily services (4 hours).
By bus:
From Buenos Aires (Retiro Bus Terminal): The companies that travel to El Calafate are: Andesmar, TAC, El Pingüino, Don Otto. All of them will take you to Rio Gallegos, where you will have to combine with local companies to arrive to El Calafate. Travel time between Buenos Aires-Rio Gallegos: about 36 hours.
From Chile: Puerto Natales to El Calafate: 5 hours.
By car:
You can choose any of the routes that reach Bahia Blanca or Rio Colorado, to continue then until San Antonio Oeste, where you will take National Route N ° 3 until Rio Gallegos, following then by the Provincial Route N ° 5. After that, National Route N ° 40, and finally N ° 11. All of them are paved; although in certain sectors, during the winter, you may need winter tires or / and chains.
Also you can decide to take the mountain range route, when arriving to Bahia Blanca, turn towards Rio Colorado, by Route 22, and from there keep on heading south by Route 237 until Bariloche. There you must take National Route N ° 40, which is paved until Gdor. Costa, from there the road alternate gravel and asphalt until Provincial Route 11, at 15 km. from El Calafate.
