The Setting
Los Glaciares National Park is located in the area known as Austral Andes in Argentina, in the south west of Santa Cruz on the border with Chile. By his magnificent natural beauty, it constitutes a wonder in the world, and was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1981.
Its name refers to the glaciers that are born on the Ice Caps, which occupies almost half its area. It contains 47 big glaciers. The most famous glacier is the 5 km-wide, 60 m high above sea level Perito Moreno, on the southern area of the park.
The 10 km-wide and 50 km-long Upsala glacier is the largest in south America.
On the northern extreme of the park, is located the highest mountain, Mt. Fitz Roy (3375 m).
Climate
This is a cool temperate climate, with an annual mean temperature of 7.5 ° C. The main precipitation falls mainly in April and May. Snowfall during winter is common, and strong persistent westerly windstorms usually occur during late spring and summer.
